Sutton and Cheam Matters Spring 2008
The Spring 2008 edition of the Sutton and Cheam Matters Newspaper, with Philippa Stround, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton, Cheam and Worcester Park was released for delivery recently, with some 31,000 copies being distributed. Some of the stories and items covered include:
Massive Concern over Future of Local NHS
Decent local healthcare is a key priority for Sutton and Cheam residents. 90% of respondents said healthcare is a top priority when responding to a survey carried out by Philippa Stroud and her campaign team. Many residents expressed real concern about the future of both St Helier and Sutton hospitals. Given the catalogue of errors and bungled decisions in recent years regarding local healthcare this is no surprise. Residents were promised a new Critical Care Unit which would be a major centre of excellence. Plans were then down graded and residents were offered the possibility of having a new District General Hospital. It looks as though all hopes for development have been dashed and that even the very existence of Sutton Hospital is now under threat.
Survey Reveals Borough needs more Crimestoppers
A major campaign for “zero tolerance on crime” was kicked off a few months ago with the biggest ever survey of local crime experience. With Sutton slipping from 2nd safest London Borough to 5th safest, Philippa Stroud, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton, Cheam and Worcester Park, sent a survey to nearly 50% of local households asking residents to tell her about their experience of crime. Thousands took the opportunity to respond, and whilst the full results are still being analyzed, the key message is that the majority want to see more police on patrol locally.
Let us Keep our Say on Planning
Many residents have told Sutton & Cheam Matters that they want a tougher approach taken to stop excessive overdevelopment in the Borough. It seems like everywhere you go bulldozers are tearing down family houses. Lots of people have expressed concern that our Liberal Democrat Council is too weak, allowing developers to have their way over planning in Sutton, with the views of local residents and their elected representatives too often ignored.
